FEKRITAMA : History
FEKRITAMA is a ridge country organization of farmers and stockbreeders of Madagascar which gathers 18 regional Federations of 18 regions out of the 22 administrative regions in the country. It was started in November 1987 during a workshop held in Manandona Antsirabe where 70 representatives of countryside associations were observing the topic: "Strategies of self-development in rural areas".
FEKRITAMA became the Christian Federation of Malagasy Peasants with a statute of trade union in September 1988 in Soanindrariny Antsirabe. Since 1988 to 1996, FEKRITAMA concentrated its efforts in sensitizing the peasants to gather themselves in basic trade unions, to inform the peasants on realities of the agricultural world, to train the peasants on the management of their associations, to promote product and experience sharing between peasants, to support the peasants with small projects and small loans in the countryside and to promote social partnership at regional, national and international level.
Since 1996, the economic project of the FEKRITAMA was structured as a mutual insurance company of saving and credit called TITEM whose management was detached from FEKRITAMA to become autonomous.
From the year 2000, FEKRITAMA improved its structure by the installation of the various sectoral branches. These various sectors organized themselves into federations leading FEKRITAMA to adopt the statute of " Madagascar Farmers' Confederation ".
It is the "peasant" branch of the Confederation of the trade unions of Malagasy workers or SEKRIMA .
Its evolution was related to the social, economic and political context of the country, since Madagascar is a country with an agricultural vocation and it is the peasants who constitute more than 80% of the population.
